So without further delay, here is the second part to my interview with the international industrial music success, DYM!
Describe one of the best experiences you’ve had at a show.
Arc: Our CD release party of "The Invilid.” All the years of work paid off that night. All of our friends and most of the Toronto scene was there to support [us]. The venue was packed, and it was a fantastic show [to] which we invited our friends, and label mates on Cop, MDM to play also.
Describe your experience at Kinetik 2.0 this year.
Arc: [Kinetik] was chaotic and a lot of fun. It was [also] very well organized. We opened on the second night, and going onstage there were about 200 people. By the time we were finished, it was already packed. [It] was very nice to see so much support for an internationally known event. Also [we got] to meet and play with a few other people from the Noitekk/Cop family. (Life cried, etc)
What’s the best part of touring? What’s the worst?
Arc: We haven't done any significant touring; however, I've been asked to play keyboards for Grendel on their upcoming North American tour, so it should be very interesting. I would imagine the sleeping conditions on a bus, and [only] showering when you [have the chance, can] be difficult. Other than that, I've been told it's a completely different reality which you really can't understand until you experience [it]. I'm very much looking forward to [touring].
How do you decide what to wear at a show?
E-n: 1 part what does not smell, 1 part something that I can jump around like a crazy person in.
Arc: E-n's girlfriend, [Jaime Lee, who owns] Zombie Queen Designs, makes some of stage clothing for us.
Other than that, [we wear] whatever we feel compliments us and we’re comfortable in that day. I've made a few accessories for myself from working at my daytime job, AslanLeather.
Who makes your clothes? Do you have any input on their design?
E-n: 90% of all the clothes I wear are done by Zombie Queen Designs, and yes I have a lot of input on how they look. Jaime Lee always makes sure they turn out great. She understands our theme well and is very good at conceptualizing it. She mostly makes clothing for women, but she’s also working on a men’s clothing line [which] should be pretty rad.
What are you working on now? When is your next album due? Are you touring? If yes, where and when.
E-n: I just finished up a bunch of remixes for various bands (see our blog post). I’ve been working a bit with Nick Gorman of Fractured, and did some work on a new Fractured track with him which should be coming out on the new Septic EP from Dependent Records. [I also] just finished a version of the song, “Little Drummer Boy,” for a wicked Christmas themed EBM/Industrial compilation [album] from Black Rain! Keep an eye out for details about that release on Black Rain’s web site . I’m also putting a hold on any live shows until our next album has been completed; we’re hoping to get that together sooner [rather] than later.
Is DYM your only project? If not, tell us about the others.
E-n: Arc and I also have a Power noise/Experimental type project called, “Not Found,” and are planning to do something more with it again after DYM’s next album is done.
What advice do you have to anyone interested in making “Dark Electronic Music”?
E-n: IF [YOUR NOT GOOD AT IT] AT FIRST, DONT STOP!!! Practice will pay off. Also just [do] what is fun; don’t let it turn into a job.
Arc: Have fun, try not to copy anyone else too much, and don't take yourself too seriously. Also make yourself a good press kit.
Is there anything else you’d like to let your “fans” know?
E-n: Arc and I are planning an expedition to the South Pole to look for Atlantis and [stuff] like that. If you are interested email us at DYM@process.org.
Arc: We appreciate every single compliment and comment, or anytime anyone recognizes us. We don't take it for granted. We also try to reply to every single message or email sent [to us]. It's very important to keep engaged with your fans. [We’d like to send] a huge thank you to everyone from both of us for the support. We're constantly amazed by it.
So there you have it folks! I hope E-n and Arc's answers have inspired you to run out and buy their album, "The Invilid"! These guys are amazing musicians and performance artists. Be sure to go and see them live, should you get the chance!!!
